The University of Maine Alumni Association – 2015 Black Bear Award

Daniel D. Churchill ’63

The Black Bear Award is presented annually in appreciation of outstanding service to the University through multiple endeavors. The award is inscribed with the legend: “For devotion and loyalty to the highest traditions of the University of Maine.”

Since his retirement, this engineering physics major has worked tirelessly on behalf of his alma mater. He joined the Executive Committee of the Class of 1963 and became the first Chair of the Advisory Board of the School of Policy and International Affairs (SPIA). As Chair, he is fully and positively engaged. He maintains close communication with SPIA faculty and board members and works with students and UMaine administrators, who respect his leadership and seek his guidance.

During his tenure as chair, SPIA has grown into a first-rate graduate school. With a distinguished background in finance and leadership, this dedicated alumnus has helped to expand the School’s connections, including those with Secretary Cohen, Dickinson College, and the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research in Abu Dhabi. He has also increased opportunities for graduate students by establishing the Churchill Internship Fund.

Besides his active involvement in SPIA, he is a loyal supporter of the University’s Climate Change Institute (CCI). He offers his skills, energy, and encouragement, advocates for the CCI, and attends symposia and field trips. Wishing to further help the CCI, he and his wife created a fund that enables graduate students to do off-campus research that addresses the interaction of humans and the natural world.

In recognition of his generous support he and his wife, Betty, received the 2014 Stillwater Presidential Award.

For his active involvement, hard work, and generous contributions to the University of Maine, we are proud to present the Black Bear Award to Dan Churchill, Class of 1963.
