Biographical Statement:

From Glenville, New York Laura Mattas spent most of her childhood and young adult years exploring along the rapids of the Hudson River and the summits of the Adirondack High Peaks, where she developed an unyielding passion for adventure and understanding the landscape around her. Mattas pursued her bachelor’s degree at the University of Maine in Earth and climate sciences. During her undergraduate career, she was a field assistant in Antarctica and New Zealand, working on the timing of deglaciations. These experiences inspired a passion for understanding glaciers and their place in the climate system. She is now continuing her education by pursuing a master’s program at the University of Maine’s Climate Change Institute advised by Dr. Aaron Putnam.

Research Area:

My research area consists of the upper Khumbu valley in northeastern Nepal and in the southern island of New Zealand.
