Caroline Wexler
MS Graduate Student
Office Location: 202 Sawyer Environmental Research Building
Advisor: Dr. Kristin Schild
Biographical Statement: I am currently pursuing a Master’s in the School of Earth and Climate Sciences, working with Dr. Kristin Schild. I was first introduced to the cryosphere sciences as a student on the Juneau Icefield Research Program in 2022. For my undergraduate thesis, I used drone imagery and synthetic aperture radar to study calving dynamics on Breiðamerkurjökull in Iceland. In addition to my thesis, I created a documentary about the Juneau Icefield Research Program, which premiered at the Anchorage International Film Festival in 2024. After completing my B.S. in Geoscience and Science Communication from the University of Connecticut in 2024, I took a gap year to work at the University of Alaska Fairbanks as a science communicator and a GIS Specialist. Outside of the classroom, I can be found skiing, biking, or hiking around the local trails.
Research Area: My research interests include remote sensing of the cryosphere using satellite, aerial imagery, and ground-penetrating radar, as well as GIS applications in earth surface processes. My master’s project uses a variety of these remote sensing tools to study ice-shelf dynamics at the McMurdo Ice Shelf Transition Zone in Antarctica.
