Biosketch

I am a climatologist working to understand how the Antarctic ice sheet behaves over long and short timescales and how these changes affect global climate. My primary research focuses on reconstructing atmospheric circulation using the chemistry contained in snow and ice. Much of my work involves the collection and analysis of Antarctic ice cores, but I also conduct field work elsewhere around the globe.

Antarctica is a major component of the Earth’s climate system. Understanding its behavior over long and short timescales will allow us to better predict future global climate change. For example, whether West Antarctica, the only marine ice sheet remaining from the last glacial maximum and which contains enough grounded ice to raise sea levels ~5m, is likely to collapse into the ocean.

In the lab, cores are processed without contamination on the University of Maine continuous melter system and the new ultra high resolution laser ablation system. The resulting high-resolution multi-parameter glaciochemical data is used to determine atmospheric chemical transport pathways over various spatial and temporal scales. Ultimately, these data are used to reconstruct paleoclimate.

I believe that continued development of a wide range of dissemination media is critical for reaching as wide an audience as possible. I consider public outreach a high priority.
