Biosketch

My research focuses on decadal-to-millennial/local-to-regional scale reconstruction of past climate and environmental variability accessed from alpine glacier ice cores.  I utilize high-resolution analysis of multiple chemical parameters (e.g. stable isotopes, major soluble ions, trace elements and radionuclides) to date and establish proxy records for spatial and temporal reconstruction of multiple climate and environmental parameters including: atmospheric circulation, temperature, precipitation, aridity, and atmospheric chemical composition. My research regions include Asia (China, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia), South America (Peru and Chile), Antarctica (South Georgia Island) and Europe (Sweden).

My research interests also include human dimensions, such as climate change adaptation and mitigation policy. I worked with the Union of Concerned Scientists (USC) on their 2014 Climate Impacts Report Encroaching Tides: How Sea Level Rise and Tidal Flooding Threaten US East and Gulf Coast Communities over the Next 30 Years which focused on projected tidal flooding in U.S. East and Gulf coast communities. Additionally, I am very interested in how climate science is being introduced and taught in secondary education. I co-created and conducted a statewide survey of middle and high school teachers to assess the prevalence of and attitudes towards climate science in the classroom and created educational resources based on the findings.

I actively work to share climate data with the public through educational brochures, blogging, and other forms of public outreach (K-12 and community groups). I’ve created and developed the website Ice Core Perspectives, which intends to introduce climate science to the public in an approachable way. I have been involved in several joint Climate Change Institute-Computer Science department projects including the development of p301, a cyber-infrastructure software for climate data, the 10green application, an air quality assessment website and mobile application, as well as a virtual reality environment, Data Visualization of the Earth’s Radiation Balance, created in collaboration with the Virtual Environments and Multimodal Interaction (VEMI) Lab.  Recently, I have begun working with the World Ocean Observatory on their World Ocean Aquarium, a virtual gaming experience for students ages 10 through 18.
